Safe Job Search

Most employers are genuine, but scammers sometimes pose as recruiters. These tips help you spot the warning signs.

Warning signs of a job scam

  • You are asked to pay. Genuine employers never charge for applications, training, uniforms, visas or “registration”.
  • The offer comes too quickly, without an interview, or the pay is far above what the role normally earns.
  • You are asked for sensitive details early, such as bank account, passport, driver licence or tax file numbers, before you have a written job offer.
  • You are asked to move money, buy gift cards, accept parcels or “process payments” for someone.
  • The conversation moves to a private chat app and the person avoids video calls or meeting at a real office.
  • Contact details do not match the company, for example a free email address for a large business, or no company website at all.
  • Pressure to decide now, or to keep the offer secret.

How to protect yourself

  • Research the employer: check their website, business registration and reviews.
  • Apply through Jora Jobs where possible, so there is a record of the application.
  • Only share your bank and identity details after you have accepted a written offer from a company you have verified.
  • Meet in a public place or at the company's office, and tell someone where you are going.
  • Never send money to get a job.
  • Keep your profile private if you prefer. You decide whether it is public and whether search engines may list it.

What we do

  • We verify companies before their jobs can go live.
  • We review job ads before publishing them.
  • We remove ads and block accounts that break our rules, and act on every report we receive.
